I'm kinda a tank freak man-No need for cloudy water and no need for a dirty tank....I'm also an algea freak-I hate seeing algea in a tank-Unless salt of course....
My tank see's 300 gal water changes weekly(only a 500 gal) and has decent filtration but is under filtered...My sump is only 2 foot wide by 3.5 foot long by 2 foot tall...Setup with eheim, pro substrate(bio) and I run a rena xp 3 setup for mechanical...And thats it...I have an excellent pump on the sump for turn over rate...I had to remove the little piece that looks like a comb from the top part of my over flow box..But that only made it silent-So I can't complain...I remove all uneaten food every feeding...
Plans for a monster sump is in the works.....So it should get much better...

I would guesstimate th RD to be right round the 8 to 9 inch mark...
On the topic of your pacu, do you have a 500 gallon tank? Am I reading that right? I have a pacu about that size all by himself in a 90 gallon. I've been looking to get him a buddy that won't get quite as big as he will, but all my attempts, specifically cat fish to help with the bioload have eneded in their mysterious disaperance. Did you start your pacu in the tank and let him grow, or did you start with all the fish at once?
