I'm heart broken....... I grew up with this dog, he's a 15 year old yellow lab his back legs don't work that well anymore he is having a hard time getting up steps, he can't control his bowl movements, and he's just old.... I have loved this dog so much, I really don't remember a time when my dog wasnt there. I know he's in pain and this is better for him but I love this dog so much i've had him since I was like 3. I'm going to miss him so much

I know exactly how you feel. A few months ago we had to put my 13 year old yellow lab down. I got her when I was also three. I still miss her, I even cried when my parents took her, but now I'm pretty much over it.

The hardest part during the first week or so is waking up knowing they aren't there any longer.

Just remember all the good times you had with him (it will help getting over the fact that he will no longer be around).

I agree. The waking up and they aren't there at the end of the bed is really hard.
I had 4 animals all die on me in a year, Mason(rott/pit) was 8 and he had bone cancer, Sadie(yellow lab/retriever) was 14, Charlie(cat) was 14 due to kidney failure or liver problems is my guess, it was when they had all those pet food recalls a few years ago and we were feeding him one of the brands on the list, Runt(cat) was 14 and he just had too many allergy problems too the point he was sneezing blood.
The one's that died from old age don't seem to be as bad as the one's that didn't it seems.
Just remember that he had a good long life with you and was there during your most fondest memories.

:( I'm sure he lived a great life. think of all the good times you had with him.

This is tough. Its especially hard when its a dog you grew up with. We had a german shorthair that was bought shortly after my birth. It was a hunting dog, and would actually bite me when I was little. Even so I grew up to love our dogs, and when that lunk-headed hunting dog died I just wasnt the same for about a week. It was tough. But, it was her time.

A new puppy will be good, but give yourself time to mourn first. My dad ran off and got a new hunting dog after his died right away. Ended up being about $2000 and we have never had a dog that was this poorly behaved. So...no rush decisions.

When I lost my pet, I resolved to not get another one. My sister told me the best thing I've ever heard concerning the loss. She said; "Would you feel better grieving alone or, would you prefer to grieve with the support of a new pet that desperately needs a home? I went out and adopted a shelter pet and it proved to be the best thing for the both of us. Just something to keep in mind.
