The shape is fine, I saw a fully grown 16" Synspilum at an LFs that was the exact same shape, like a dinner plate. they just turn that way as they get older.

Sometimes when I say South Americans I refer to them as a whole...such as the continent, not the region like South or Central

FYI - The countries of Central America are part of the North American continent, not South American.

I have never seen a freshly wild caught adult Vieja look like that (like just came out of the lake/river). I know they get pretty beefy but no quite like that.

Here's an example of a freshly caught adult maculicauda (found on google, not sure where credit is due but not my pic):

You can see the fish is thick but nowhere near what the OP's fish looks like.

Lol, well they're obviously different strains, and my fish is actually slightly underweight (IMO) in my avatar pic as he was still recovering from the nasty IPs he had when I rescued him.

But in the pic above, ideally just slightly more filled out in the stomach is how I like my fish to look, and I think is about how most of them look in nature.

yeah I agree, I remember I read your rescue thread ages ago and was astounded by the transformation!

Im glad he is getting some attention. I dont know how old he is because I bought him and grew him about an inch maybe in a year. He still spawns from time to time with some of my females

Yeah hes definitively filled out nicely since you got him. It was a pretty bad situation he was in, then again a lot of the large fish at that store were and probably still are.
