Almost 6 years ago (Feb. 2011) my wife and I purchased 2 aquariums, a 90 and a 125, taking advantage of winter sales, with the intent of setting them up in our basement in the near future. Well, I built the stands, bought some additional equipment, but life got in the way, really in the way, and the project was put on hold.

Fast forward to this past fall, when I finally got the stands and aquarium backs painted, and bought an FX6 for half price at PetSmart (gotta love Black Friday). The 125 is up first, to be followed by the 90 in a month or two, after I take down an existing 58 and 20. Everything is ready, except for hooking up the filter and installing the heaters (doors are in the garage, will be added later). Substrate is pool filter sand mixed with black Carib Sea sand. Driftwood was an Ebay find. I'm going to try Growstones GS-1 recycled glass hydroponic media for bio. It's very porous, floats in water, and at $12 for 9 liters it seemed worth a try.

Stocking will start with my existing 3 Silver Dollars (reason for artificial plants!), Black Skirt and Serpae Tetras, and a seldom seen pleco, to be followed by Festivums and possibly a couple Angels.

Well, I would like to thank you for this story/post. I used to think I was terribly slow in setting up my 220 because of the same reasons. It took me nearly nine months to get it up and running, and it still has a long way to go in the aquascaping and stocking, but it at least has my two fire eels in it now.

Congrats on the setup. It looks great!

Congrats on finally getting the tank up! Must feel rewarding after that much time. I think a friend of mine uses the same hydroponic media if I remember correctly. Any thoughts of what other fish you may add to the 125?

Thanks for the comments. As to additional fish, I'm thinking a couple additional Silver Dollars, some Corys, and some type of dwarf cichlid, like Curviceps (enjoyed keeping those in the past). Selection here in Des Moines is rather limited, unless a special order is placed; surprising in a metro area of just over half a million people. I guess I'm spoiled from my years in St. Louis, which had a large wholesaler with a retail shop.

I live in a horrible area for the aquarium hobby. Not much selection at all. Last couple years I took the plunge and started getting fish shipped. Has definitely given me some more options.

+1 shipping is the way to go. Airpirt to airport being the cheapest and easier on the fish.

It took me awhile to get my 125 setup also. I had the tank for probably 6 months, then I got a deal on a stand or finally an fx5. It sit in the back room of our house for well over a year.

I think a large group of some kind of Cory would be really cool, something I've wanted to do.

How heavy was the 125? I'm about to buy one but I don't know if 2 guys can lift one
