My New 225 Gallon

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That sounds awesome. Maybe I would be overstocked if I get a school of bala, pictus and clown loaches. I think I will go with pictus I saw em cheap at a pet supplies plus. I will quarantine them.

Update: I thought tank was cycled but turns out it wasnt. Jack dempsey and green terror got ick. I tested water and had 1 ppm nitrite. I did a big water change and added medicine. It was the jungle ick fizz stuff. Took 4 boxes for 225...
I learned during my reef tank days only bad things happen fast so I waited a day before adding salt. I also raised temp to like 84 over a few days. I used carbon after a few days to get meds out. I bought some nox ich malachite green and treated once with it. I must say it was hard to treat ich during the cycle. I can see the advantage of fish less cycle. I also used seachem prime during this I ended up doing several water changes. The fish never stopped eating but they were covered pretty well with white spots.
I got a small albino oscar who first got beat by the jewel so I put oscar in quarantine. He was doing fine so I caught the jewel and took it back to lfs. Had to buy egg crate and a big net to catch the jewel. So I put the oscar back in big tank and green severum Starts bullying him. I don't think it hurt the oscar like the jewel did but I took green severum out to quarantine. Tank has been a handful but oscar is awesome and I don't want anything beating him. When he gets big maybe I will put green severum back. Paybacks are a ..... joking I won't let any of them get beat too bad. All is peaceful for now. Tank is zero ammonia and zeo nitrite. I never saw ammonia at all on the tests. I used a seeded filter pad so I thought it was cycled but then the nitrite shot up all the sudden. Anyway more later.

I believe the salt will combat nitrite poisoning, you'll probably be looking at large water changes to combat ammonia and nitrite until the bacteria establish.

Regarding the use of medication and seachem in conjunction, it'd be interesting to hear from more experienced members on whether this is safe; as the last thing you'd want is a toxic chemical created.

Hope it settles soon for you! :)

Everything is fine as of middle of last week (around sept 1st or so). It was a concern that the treatment I was doing for the ick, combined with the seachem and nitrite would cause more stress than cure. For this reason I only did one thing at a time. To summarize in chronological order
1st day I noticed ick-
water test found 1 ppm nitrite
performed 50% water change using Prime (i doubled the dose to bind nitrite better. Instructions said you can go up to 5X the dose)

1st day cont:
removed carbon
Added jungle fizz ick meds
started raising temp
2nd day
added salt

3rd day
nothing
4th day 50% water change
added new carbon

4th day
added nox ich to kill any free swimmers that hatched

All is well now

My main concerns and difficulties during this:
1. Inability to do water changes because of meds in water
This was mitigated by using seachem prime to bind nitrite and salt supposedly detoxes the nitrite
2. Will the meds kill the beneficial bacteria.
From what i read it seems methylene blue can kill BB but malachite (victoria green) does not

Next time I set up a tank I will do fishless cycle

Update: I have 16 giant danios which are cool. I had 6 and loved them but I thought if I got more they would school tighter. They don't so now I wish I had less but they are cool. I think I overfeed especially frozen food because the water was kind of cloudy. I ran out of frozen and now I have clear water.
I got 10 tiny tiger barbs and two disappeared. I put the egg crate divider back in. The barbs tuck in their fins and they can swim through the egg crate holes but no other fish can fit.

Got 3 pictus and they stay behind egg crate also and stay in the corner of the tank at the top along the glass. They are eating well but behave weird.
I think i may have had a very small mini cycle because the dempseys tail was clamped at times and his colors werent as good. I tested but saw zero ammonia and zero nitrite. Nitrates maybe 20

so i have:
green terror
dempsey
green severum
gold severum
oscar
salvini
3 pictus cats
16 giant danios
8 tiger barbs
