Picked up a 46 gallon bowfront with stand in awesome conditions. It brought around 80 pounds of gravel, penguin 350, nice big air pump and 24" rock, flip up glass lid, light, decorations and accessories for $100.

Im currently cycling the tank. And will be changing the decorations and gravel probably next paycheck.

Some questions... will the penguin 350 be enough for this tank? So far it has great flow. I also had a magnum HOT 250 (canister/hang on back) that i could run on here as well and is in the pictures, but i cant get it to prime right atm, ill try again tomorrow.

Any recommendations as far as stock goes? Dont want anything fancy, but fish that will be active(cichlids). Was thinking some GT's?

Anyways here are some pics!

I also have a 75 gallon but dont have anywhere to put something bigger for now!
Any idea what i should stock with?

Nice setup! Depending on your stocklist, you may need to supplement that Penguin 350 with another filter. I've switched over to canisters now, but I used to keep two 350s on my 40 gallon breeder and thought it was just right for filtration.

Stocklist... I think green terrors are going to be too large for that tank. Males get about a foot long and really need a 4-foot tank to be happy. I never knew they got that big until I saw a large male at a friend's house and my jaw dropped. He was easily the size of a nice large Midas male.

You could go for something like a female Jack Dempsey (males get too large for that tank). Or you could get a pair of convicts or some other fish in the Archocentrus or Cryptoheros genera. Or a pair of something in the Thorichthyes genus. Basically you want to stick to one or two individuals that max out around 8" tops. If you want to look into really unique cichlids, then you could check out Jeff Rapps' stock at www.tangledupincichlids.com. That's how I learned about more cichlids than I ever thought existed. :)

Well i got a small(around 2 inch) tiger oscar and 2 clown loaches for now. It will take them a while to grow since i got them real small and hopefully by that time i will get something bigger. I am going to get a small canister whenever i can. Probably a rena xp3!

Sounds good. That oscar will grow up very fast, but for now the tank will work as a growout.

Long-term, you might want to invest in a larger canister than the XP3, something like a Fluval FX5 or large Eheim. When your Oscar needs that 75+ gallon tank, he/she will really need a lot of filtration.

I might think of buying an fx5 and putting it in the 75 and just getting the xp3 from the 75 and putting it into the 46. Think that would be good? The xp3 provides GREAT filtration along with a penguin 350 on the 75.

Yeah that would be good option! I like XP3s but when you get to larger tanks, it really helps to have the extra flow of something like the FX5.

Post pictures of the little guy when you get a chance!

Was just about to do that!
He doesnt have any orange yet but he seems really healthy and looks gorgeous to me. I tried getting pictures of the loaches but they are constantly swimming around!
