My new 55g tank - Still Cycling

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
if you do the pleco, do it because you like how they look, and make sure you get one that fits in a 55, since the commons will outgrow a 55
they are also poop machines and shouldn't really be kept to eat algae
cichlids, you actually have a lot of options
just decide if you want africans or south americans or central americans

I like the way the pleco looks, but if it's a poop machine, what are you suggestions for eating algae?
As for the cichlids, I like the ones from Lake Malwai. How many would be good in a 55g?

Thank you again!!

I've got one pleco that is about to get thrown into a livestock tank because of the giant poop. I've switched over to keeping an army of Malaysian trumpet snails. They normally hide in the substrate during the day. When they do come out during the day it is usually the giant ones that have very decorative shells. I've heard they can reproduce rapidly but that has never been an issue in my tank (same for every other kind of snail I've kept). Almost all of my fish are from the river and will mow them down when they come out. I've also got a large ram's horn apple snail that does a good job of cleaning up stuff that the algae eater misses.

snails with african cichlid smight not work though
if anything, seed the tank with a ton of mts first
I have a CA/SA cichlid planted setup that i would throw the odd mts in, and the only thing that I am finding to have really done the job well of getting MTS to stay in that tank was buying a good 100 of them online and throwing them all in at once
now I'm just waiting for them to appear everywhere (which I'm okay with cause I love bio-diversity)
