My new 8" King Kong Parrot

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, I probably paid way too much for her then, but she was worth it. she is awesome! Plus she got a good home :)

massive beak, v mouth, toomuch mutation to be a KK parrot
has some alright fins tho

You're going to have to explain that in more detail. I don't understand what you mean. What about the beak vs mouth that makes this specific fish not KK? I've been reading as much as I can find about them but can't see anything describing using the beak in comparison to the mouth to determine KK or regular. I've read a few things about the mouths and saying normal KK will have a normal mouth, but I've also read once large enough they will form the up side down triangle. Can you be more specific? I'm not saying anyone is right or wrong since I really don't know more than I've read on the subject, I'd just like to know how to be able to distinguish the two apart from each other for future reference, and just in general, to know. I just can't fathom her other BP (the one in the picture) growing this big.

The main difference is not the shape of the mouth. they both should have the upside down triangular mouth to be considered or conform to the definition of "true parrots" whatever that means. but the notch, that starts right above the eyes and forms the "face" of the parrot is not evident in KKP. KKP has a "more natural" cichlid-like sloping forehead. that why its possible for them to develop nuchal humps while most regular parrots cannot. simply put they do not have the trademark deformed beak face. i hope that helps. i explained to the best of my ability. it is quite easy to differentiate when you get it. the hard part is that the new parrots coming into the market now are no longer conforming to the trait guidelines for parrots so they look a lot like KKP. the one pictured by the OP is without a doubt a regular parrot. nice size on it tho. they rarely get that big anymore

P.S. color really has nothing to do with it. color in regard to KKP is a marketing ploy. they juice those bad boys up and make em look really red and say KKP so they can sell a bunch at above the going price.

my lfs learned to differentiate from me and his other specialty customers. lol. a couple weeks ago he had some medium KKP in his regular BP tank labeled as large blood parrots for $25. i never really buy parrots so i mentioned hey some of those are KKP. he was like "really". the next day i was like i should get 3 females for future breeding projects so i went back. they were now labeled as KKP and he wanted $55 each. i laughed... so did he. i actually believe he plays dumb to dupe me and feed my ego

Well anyway... even though she is a regular BP, she is really awesome and full of personality. Plus, my other female follows her everywhere. I think she would cost more anyway, being that she is so big, and may even get bigger. Plus hopefully I can breed her with my Flowerhorn when he gets big enough.

I hope to one day get an actual KKP, haha.

The chances of anyone getting their hands on a REAL kkp is slim to none.

Apparently there are a few on sale on aquabid right now so they can't be that difficult to purchase if you have means to the internet...

Yeah, that definitely makes sense. I can't see a fish with a beak shape with the indention and all developing a nuchal hump. So you're saying the sharp endention (wide open V shape, whatever you want to call it) is a dead give away from BP and KKP. The true KKP will have a nice smooth transition rounded beak in the nuchal area? That makes total sense.

I wasn't referring to the color as far as id'ing this fish. I was just saying that because she really is WAY more red now and super white in those pics since she was just moved. Looks way better now. :)

i have two kkps
one of them can close his mouth and has red eyes
the other cant close it mouth but has flowerhorn body shape(kinda)
there both super red

Can we get some pictures of your KKP's for reference please? I'd like to see them.
