Jason, great looking male Borheim!!!! I have had no luck with these guys. I 've had three pair and the male has done my female in all three times. I eventually lost the males to fungus, etc.... This is probably my favorite Cichlid but they are so hard to get a hold of. Good looking with your male and finding a female!!!!
If the wild caught specimens exhibit the sunken belly, maybe it's actually an inverse situation. Perhaps they get so much good live food as babies in the wild that their skeletons are over developed early on to create what appears to be a sunken stomach but is actually just protruding prominences around it?

knifegill- I highly doubt it. check out volcomstones pair. they're wild and part of the same group as this guy. i think it has to do with the care of the fish. maybe previous owner only fed once a day or every other day and. now with having to work mre often my fish get fed once a day, sometimes twice and the occasional fasting. he did say he ate like a pig but didnt say how often he fed. i usually feed twice a day and change water every other day. this guys belly was fat when i gave him to previous owner. my umbee for example came in with sunken belly. it only took couple weeks or so and he started thinkening up. so again i believe its how you raise your fish but good thought tho

My idea of a perfect male, I love the males when they get the grey -green coloration and he has perfect blue spangling all they way through to the fins and nice trailers developing. The males are my favorite cichlid behind adult coloration nic. dovii males. Not all males have that perfect spangling. Very nice pick up. I had one like that at 5 " and also a male 8" and two females 7" three of which were wc about a month ago. lost all 4 in domestic dispute. filter was turn off , a mystery? when i wasn't there. spouse is denying involvement. When fish started to go down they werent even removed lost big grammodes, 3 big wc costa rican dovii 9" , 7 " wc umbie male. I was sick, totally distraught. I picked up some of your fry from Ira the day they came in. they are doing good, festae and haits and they are visibly bigger. anyway nice pick up.
