My New Alligator Snapper.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Watching like a hawk, I have kept CST before and they seem for more aggressive than AST. My CST would chase after everything in the tank, the AST just trolls around like a little tank keeping to himself and he likes sleeping at night with my Map and FRB, something that the I would never allow with the CST. The AST is very, very docile even when handled, my main concern is that he accidentally bites one of the other turtles when hunting. But he does have his own tank to go into soon, as soon as I get a few things I need to get it up and running.

Good luck with it. I am skeptical of keeping that bunch together but their enclosure looks nice and they all look healthy... If you say there have not been any problems then I believe you.

I know its only a situation that can occur now due to their small sizes, I am looking for something to house my AST in separately as we speak.

Its rated for 18 inches, but I should check. So far no aggression, but then again the Softshell stays in his own liitle side of the tank and doesn't go near the AST.

Are you using the Reptisun bulbs? If so the 5.0 is rated for 12" and the 10.0 is rated for 20"

I don't use the Reptisuns at all, lots of negatives on them and they have been linked to causing Eye damage on lots of different Herps and are too be stayed away from. I use a 100 Watt Mega-Ray Mecury Vapor Light that has provides Basking Heat and UVB output.

I love mvbs, I'm still concerned because you also have it behind a screen also which will stop some additional light in addition to the height. But, it seems like it's only temporary until they gain some size and you raise your water level. One thing you could do to be on the safe side is let them sun outside for 15-20 minutes each day in direct natural sunlight.

I do that a couple times a week already, but its going colder here now so that will stop soon. What I have done to counter the screen though, is cut holes into it where the MVB is at to allow better UVB coverage. And yeah, I will be raising the water level soon.

Really? Didn't know that. A quick google search didn't reveal anything
