my new artifact?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What ever that thing is its gfot a hell of alot of craftsmanship put into it. I think its made out or mable myself.

Did someone paint it it looks like some of the white detail in the pics is newly painted.

either way it would be cool to find out what is really is then what it's worth. But comming frm yor gramps it's not worth getting rid of no matte what it's worth.

looks like marble to me....

Its hand made for sure, I bet itd be worth a good bit if wasnt broken. It appears to be very intricately done.

It looks to be a type of "soap" stone. The bird reminds me of a Lady Amhearst Pheasant or a Lyre-Tailed Bird of Paradise. That's my two cents.

dont think it has any paint on it at all
and ya i dont see me getting rid of it
:)

thats pretty cool looks to be either marble or soap stone. A way to tell is you can actually chip away soap stone with a knife (much like soap). Try a small bit on the underside with a knife. You cant chip marble hardly at all with just a knife.

great carvings on it i've only seen carvings like that on things form around asia. but the carvings i've seen have been on mostly ivory and some wood but havent reall seen andy stone carved like that. great piece none the less take care of it never know what it might be worth!

That's quite a carving! If you find out the whole story, please fill us in.

Did your grandpa clean it up somehow? It doesn't seem to be very encrusted. Any idea where he was diving when he found it?

That's a real a mystery you have. Check to see when the Antiques Roadshow is coming to your area! :)

VERY cool!!!!! Look for a signature on the bottom, that'll help a great deal in determining where it's from. I'm guessing Italian? The etchings of the floers on the pots look cool. I'd love to see that in person so I could study it better.
