These days nothing. Black diamond was originally a very high quality wild caught ray. Few years later everything is a bd something. So black diamond pretty much doesn't exists anymore as a type of ray rather than I've heard many of the Asians refer to it as a grade of Leo.

That was a little rough... there are some breeders who kept the true "BD" bloodlines sacred but BDs are collection point of leos so technically the same fish and through selective breeding and hybridization you can get rays with the same look and qualities of a true BD
 
Ok. So BD is more of a locality of the Leo that has a little bit different apperance because of it. Kind of like the difference in locality of clown loaches where Borneo loaches have more color and Sumatra loaches have more of a silver hue to them. But for the most part these days it's just a look achievable by selective breeding? More or less.

BDs look a lot different then true leo but it is a locality that the original Bds hail from that had that look.
