Ouch!! How do you sedate and how do you examine them..and where exactly??
They (I have only put them in this chemical to kill them) put them into something which is probably similar to clove oil (its a long chemical name) for a set amount of time depending on the size and type of knife it is.

Then they take it out, put it on a wet paper towel, hook it up to a respirator so it can stay out of water longer, and do w/e they do to sex it.

Hey dark nights, if you don't mind me asking, how big is you're tiretrack eel? I've been thinking about getting one.

I have two, the first one is ranging from 13-14 inches the second one from 15-16 inches.

I love this tank, it's got a lot of species of fish in there, looks cool.

Clove oil - 5 drops per gallon.

You can also use Finquel, here are the instructions: http://www.drugs.com/vet/finquel.html

However, I really don't recommend doing it.

Plus, I have yet to positively confirm that A. albifrons even has a urogenital papilla. I have found that some other apteronotids do not, but there is conflicting information about A. albifrons.

I did find some information about head morphology and apteronotids. There is a lot of morphology between species. Four species are positively identified in which sexually mature males have elongated jaws (the horse-face you referred to), but A. albifrons is not one of them. (Parapteronotus hasemani,
Apteronotus leptorhynchus
A. (Ubidia) magdalenensis, “Apteronotus” bonapartii, and Compsaraia n. sp. A.) sexually mature males develop elongate jaws (Cox-Fernandes 1998a; Albert 2001; Cox-Fernandes et al. 2002).

I think the jury is still out, at least in my book. I haven't found much information yet regarding what age is required for albifrons to reach sexual maturity, in another species it was suggested that sexual maturity would be reached at age 1 year.

When Zhou and Smith in Bloomington studied sex differences in electrocommunication in Adontosternarchus devenanzii, they determined the sex by laparotomy (surgically), as that seems to be the only definitive way to sex them.
