my new bichir setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I like a decent sized school of neon tetras, every time I've had them they're extremely hardy, and the bichirs eat them almost immediately after being put in the tank. But to be honest whatever hardy fish you can find willl work, if you're buying from a chain store I would seriously recommend a quarentine in a smaller tank until you're sure they don't have anything. Last thing you want is to start off a fresh tank needing to combat something.

Also I forgot to ask in my last post, have you chosen a stock for the tank yet?

I already have two ornates and one endlicheri. They will go into it and i will most likely also add an lap. But i´m still not sure what fish could house mid water and the surface.

Personally I'd go with a few african butterfly fish for the surface. They'll cruise the surface of your tank and provide a bunch of entertainment come feeding time. But you'll need a decent footprint, you'll want to keep them in a school of at least 4-6 to mimimize aggression, and since they each get about 4-5inches you'll definitely want a good footprint for the tank. I'd thought of keeping polys with Discus, but I just don't have the desire to keep discus at this time, you may want to consider it though.

butterfly fish look nice. Do you think they can make it? My male ornate is pretty massive if you know what i mean.

I don´t want that scene for my butterfly fish:

Hey Darius, I just tried to pm you, you need to enable messages lol, anyway here's what I was going to tell you.

Hey Darius, sorry for writing back so late, life has been a little crazy. Anyway, it's possible your ornate might eat them, ornates are known to be aggressive polys. The best thing I could suggest would be to get the AFBs as large as you can so that you can minimize the chance of them fitting in your ornate's mouth. It would be difficult to corral them with a tank divider, since they stay at the water's surface they'll need as much room as possible. Whether or not ABFs will work with your ornate I can't answer with complete certainty. Sorry I can't be of more help, good luck with the tank :)

p.s. If you don't want to risk AFBs you can always go with angels or discus, both could look nice with your polys and will likely be too large for your ornate to eat.
