MY NEW COMMON SNAPPER!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I set the 10g up pretty nice with a basking area now. I haven't seen him come out of the water yet though. He mostly just hangs on with his head above water... He's pretty cool! Very active turtle!

In the wild they don't always come out of the water to bask but they do enjoy sunning themselves in very shallow water, sometimes with just their shells peaking out from the water surface.

They mostly come out for egg laying only.

It is as Seth states, they want contact with the sun, but seldom step out of the water.

I have a land area with damp substrate that my snapper will bury itself in for days at a time coming back to the water when hungry to feed.
I recently put a filter system in his 75gallon tank & when I turned it on it startled him & he emitted a putrid stink that stunk up
my reptile room for 1/2 a ady & fouled up his water source. cool turtles they look so pre-historic

dude! i wanna get one! i was wondering what i was going to do with my 200 gallong and i just got the answer! :)

Here's a pic of my new snapper.

I'm kinda worried. I hope you all can help!

I've been interested in getting an aquatic turtle for a while but didn't want a turtle that requires a basking area. So last week while I was at work I jumped on Craigslist and clicked on the "Pets" link. I came across an add that someone posted to sell their snapping turtles. They were priced pretty low, $20 each. I thought to myself, "this is worth checking out!" I began texting the kid who posted the add and a week later (today) we met up so I could take a look at the turtles. Both of these snapping turtles, although one bigger than the other, seemed to be in great condition! I had a 10g tank waiting at home for the new turtle. When I got home and put the turtle in its new tank I noticed it had a bunch of stuff hanging off of it! Like peeling skin. But it's all over! On its shell and on its skin. I called the kid and asked him about this. He claims its normal and happens a couple times a month sometimes.
•IS THIS NORMAL?
•HOW CAN I TREAT THIS PROBLEM?
•IS THE TURTLE WORTH KEEPING?

They need to get completely out of the water to bask. Although you may not think they will, they do. So set up or buy a basking dock. You can use rocks to form one, like this uploadfromtaptalk1350881208222.jpg
Or buy a floating dock.
Get a uvb/Uva bulb to support and assist growth and health. Fill that tank up with some minnows to get them snacking. And post some pics! Wanna see the other guy and the setup!
