Looks male to me but like i was told vent the cuban take pics of the vent and post them on here to be 100% sure i went through this i have had 3 cubans and now down to one because of aggression. is there anything else goin in with it

Perhaps up to 3 other 4-5 inch ones for the time being, if he will have them. In 75 for the long term, he may not allow any others. As we all know it depends on the fish. Fortunately for me, I have a large (in excess of 1,000 gallon) cichlid pond I am setting up in a greenhouse at the school where I work. So the short answer is I would like to have 1-3 tankmates (size and temperment depending), but am prepared to move them to a larger setup if it doesn't work.

Cichlids are funny things. I have had the regular suspects never allow any tankmates, even in a 240 gallon (dovii, haitensis, Jag, etc...). But I have also had tanks with ebjd's coexisting with aggressive fish. In one tank I had an oscar and severum that owned it. They dominated a 14 inch jag and a 10 inch female dovii. That is why I love (and my wife hates) the hobby. It is fun to see what combos can work, as long as you watch it so the fish don't get hurt and have a backup plan.

With that in mind, what other similar sized cichlids would you try with this guy? I am not interested at this time in a breeding pair. Thanks.

Good to see you back in the hobby Troy! Hope your well bud. Love the cuban.

@ aclockworkorange what kind of sand is that in your tank ?

It's some aragonite sand I got from some old saltwater tank (came through JK47 actually from a tank he helped a friend load up). My tap water comes from rain runoff water and is extremely soft so it acts as a buffer for CAs that like it a bit harder.

Yours was hard to tell, I'd bet money the OP's is a male though.

Aggression wise, I think a single male has a decent chance of working with other fish. Just have to try it out I guess.

Thanks. I am glad to be back.

I would have said female, just beacuse of the rounded fins, but I have never seen a cuban in the flesh so i am no expert!
Plus the rounded fins = female isn't a 100% accurate sexing method.
Although I must say: "What a stunner of a fish"
