Well I came home with a small fading flowerhorn last night. I picked him up as one of them "Red Texas" cichlids petsmart has been selling. I didn't buy him thinking it was gonna be a red tex, I just saw the color and wanted to give him a try. I brought another 2 weeks ago and stuck him in my African tank to grow out and never saw him again sooo I thought he was a goner. I was in petsmart last night and thought I would see if they had another. The lady said they got in 3 and she bought one and I bought the last. Well as my luck goes about 20 min after I put the new fish in the tank out swims the original one I bought lol. So now I'm gonna raise two. I've got some pics, not the best but it will give you an idea. Ill update this as they grow and give people an idea of what they look like. Right now I think they look like midas x flowerhorns, but that's just my opinion. The larger one already has a hump on his head which is really awesome. Hope you can see it in the pics. Let me know what you think. The last two pics are of the smaller one and the first pics are of the fader. It's hard to tell but his color is fading off in patches and around his face. Nice bit of pearling too :).

I know mbuna are aggressive but they are not even bothering the new Texas. He hasn't eatin in 4 days, nor come out of his cave lol. I'm kinda hopping he just has a passive attitude, would help when it goes into the 100 gallon. I remember my gt being shy at first but he ate after a few days. I think I'm just excited to start them on quality food and watch them color up and grow. Ill keep this thread updated from time to time to show there progress.

Could be the food, could also be from in the tank with african cichlids. What's the name of the food you're trying to feed to him?

I give all my cichlids Hikari Bio-Gold cichlids pellets w/ color enhancer daily, and twice a week they get a mix of brine shrimp/blood worms.

In the African tank I use bio gold every other day and hikari excel the others. It's a plant based food for the mbuna. My gt loves it. I'm sure it's the stress of the fish zooming by him all the time. Ill give them a few more days and see what happens. It's gonna be fun watching it fade. The gill covers and belly are already changing :)
