damn man..

ive never seen a patternless delhezi... uh well im wrong again.. whats new?

I think hes about 8 or 9 inches.. just a small little bugger... I just love watching him go crazy swimming everywhere... I went back to Big Al's to get another one but they dont have any... I want the Ornate they are awesome!!

That was the one fish my hubby picked and especially that I disagreed with.. He thought b/c his buddy has one in a 90 gallon for 2 years we will be ok with 125.. I tried to explain that we dont have a big enough tank but he wont listen to me. We are probably going to buy a house in 2 - 3 yrs and he thinks we have enough time to build him his 400 gallon.. Theres no getting through to him.. I showed him pics on the net that these grow to 4 feet and he got happy!!!!!

We got the shark about 4 months ago? I think? It has not grown too fast.. I am hoping that the growth rate is SLLLLOOOWWW... stupid shark already ate one of my Crayfish and then just spit it out :swear: I should post a new thread asking for info on Paroon Sharks.

BTW.. They were labelled "Imperial Shark" and should only grow 2 -3 feet!!! BWAHA AHAHAHAHAHAAH

You asked how to pronounce Bichir.

Well, most people say "Biker" but i actually did a little research on this because i didnt want to sound like a doofus when i went to the LFS

There is no correct pronunciation, because no one knows the original pronunciation. I actually was pronouncing it "Bisheer" and found out that might be closest to the original pronunciation. But i just say "Biker" now or i get looked at crosseyed too.

WHY BICHIR?

When Europeans (French) discovered the genus Polypterus in 1809 it had already been known along the Nile since the time of the pharoahs. The local peoples referred to them as bichirs (unknown pronunciation and spelling). While unable to come up with an exact meaning for the word it was most likely a descriptive term (''whip'' has been suggested) for this type of fish.

The French most likely pronounced it as phonetically as possible to the orginal native word and came up with bee-sheer as a pronunciation and spelled 'bichir'. Since this would be the name of these fish for
several years until they were scientifically described and put into the proper family it became an accepted common name.

However the correct English pronunciation is up for grabs. Several dictionaries all have their own pronunciation including the below:
bee cher
beech er
biker
bercheer
bi cher
bir chir is common in England
Also known by the common name lobed fin pike, dinosaur eel.
The name Polypterus : poly=many + pterus=fins and is pronounced po-lyp'-terus.
