Sorry about your eel.
Ordered mine from LiveAquria.com also and it came in like yours, the size of a crayon. Thank goodness I have a cherry shrimp/marbled cray breeding tank because the little baby shrimps and crays are the only thing the eel can eat. Such young eels will not eat frozen/dead food and the regular sized ghost shrimps are too big for them. I tried cutting up some small red worms yesterday, but they were still too big (fat) for the eel to eat, though he tried!
I'm not sure of the growth rate of fire eels, but it looks like it will be a while before I can start training it to eat other foods!
If you deiced to try again with a fire eel get one in the 10" range, they are much easier to train onto other foods.
