So my friend at the lfs called me up today and said hey I got something for you to fill the new 120 gallon tank with, he told me to come on down and check it out so I did. Well now I'm sitting at home starring at my new fire eel. I have a peacock in my 55 gallon and this fire eel blows him out of the water in size and beauty. I'm waiting for my 120 to finish cycling before I put him in there. Here are a few pics.

Nice little guy, kind of looks like mine did when I first got him. I'd becareful with the polys, especially the albino. Mine were mean and would try to fit anything into their mouth they could. It may take awhile to adjust and start eating or it may right away. Be prepared for the people to tell you how big it will magically grow overnight and how your measly 120 will not be big enough for very long.

What type of substrate will you be using in the 120?

I noticed at the lfs they like to bury themselves but mine likes to cruise around my plants and sit under a big piece of drift wood that I have in there. I figure sand would be good so he wont damage himself or anything else that I want to add in there. I have polys so I want to make sure their stomachs don't get torn up.

My M dayii outgrew her 120 at 2yrs old... and they reach maybe 1/2 what a fire eel will... ;) So you have a few years before you will need to upgrade if you don't stunt it by feeding them just frozen bloodworms. Most don't because they die long before they outgrow a 120.. because most people don't know or want to actually care for them properly.

Nice eel OP def worth a spot in any big tank.

Because they always swim stretched out and are not the least bit flexible. You'll never see it spending most of its time practically tying itself in knots. You will see very few that get that big. But blood worms are a poor long term solo diet.

I have a night crawler "farm" so to speak so he will be eating those along with some other foods. To me I like to feed my fish a verity so they get the all the good stuff that it needs. His diet that I put together is live ghost shrimp that double as a cleaning crew so he can eat when hes hungry if I'm not feeding him enough, night crawlers and Beef heart. My polys eat the same things. Is there anything else you would recommend?

Edit: After deployment I will be getting a 270 Gallon acrylic tank and he will be moved into that once its set up how I want it. Basically my man cave is a 10 gallon Planted/feeder breeder, 55 gallon, 120 gallon, and then my whole wall will be a 270 gallon 72x36x24

Once mine got bigger he started taking pieces of fish filet and market shrimp. You can stuff them with pellets or marinate in a vitamin sauce. Mine has refused straight pellets but eats everything by hand.
