It may not of had a go yet, but trust the 99% of people that will tell you, it will go for the slime coat at some point, and when it does it gets a thirst for it and doesn't stop till you have a dead Bichir.

Bichir 101 - bichirs + Pleco is a no no.

Your right . I did read they suck on rocks and have seen them doing it. I have been looking around for sand.

sands everywhere bro. All kinds of sands usually work.
They have nice sand under the fish tanks at PetSmart, the tanks that have live fish and plants in them.

Finely crushed gravel works too. If you decide to go cheap, just get a mortar and pestle and grind it
