My new Frontosa!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mike D is pretty good about identifying Fronts. You might drop him a PM.

They look good though!

One thing that will help these fish to look their best and really improve coloration is to take out the gravel and replace it with some black sand and take the blue background down and replace it with a black background (you can use regular flat latex paint and a rollar ) It works wonders, truly. You will be suprised how much darker blue they appear and how much more comfortable they will be. Fronts live very deep in the lake and are happiest in dimly lit (low wattage white bulbs or mix of white and marine glo for example) . That setup on my fronts has really made their blue colors pop !!!

Yes, I was going to do some cleaning on the glass this w/e...
Should I take the wood out and replace with flower pots?

Changing to a back black should't be an issue, I'll do this in time. One question on the sand, how would this affect the PH? I want to avoid putting any buffers into the water...

The fish are very skittish, everytime I feed them I soak the food and then let it sink down to them... Should I not feed them for a few days and see if they will go for floating food?

after looking closely and studying the fronts for awhile.{keeping in mind} i am not an expert .... please do not hold me to it...but i would say they are Zaire Blue.. that mask is what sets them apart.. some pics they look very blue other pics they look a bit washed out.. it happens when fronts are settling in and ajusting.. here are three pics..first is..one wild zaire, next is moba Last is Zaire babies.. tank raised.. the mask alone tells me they are the same..

fronts {gibberosa} do not come to the top to eat..i only feed sinking Hikari pellets... even after all these years mine will take their time eating.. i give them 10 minutes and take out anything they do not eat...feeding every other day is good.. but not floating food... they rarely come to the top for any reason.. they are from deep deep in the lake... they like their hide outs.. move slowly and grow slowly...

Do not worry about the sand, if you go with a black sand or argonite, you should have no issues with buffering. Try the 3M color quartz, you won't have any issues with buffering.
