My New FRT!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I guess the rough flight made him really skinny because he was kind of fat at the shop. Luckily he started eating some romaine lettuce and shrimp pellets a few hours ago. I will limit his animal protein intake by adding more vegetables tomorrow.

I've tried bananas and apples today but they were ignored by my FRT. Should I just stick with vegetables ?

Also, it would be great if somebody coul give me the daily feeding schedule of their FRT and what variety of food is fed. I really love this turtle and would like to give it as much attention as it deserves. BTW, thanks to Oddball for the good FRT links

In addition to the Dr. turtle, should I also use "ZooMed Repti-Turtle Sulfa Dip" from time to time just to be safe? Is it safe enough for FRT use?

I can't seem to find a good low protein sinking pellet for FRT(a lot of them are floating).

I've never found need for using a dip so, unless you see active lesions, save the dip for a specific treatment.

Try offering kiwi halves to your stubborn eater. All of my FRTs really go for this fruit. There are loads of proper sinking foods for these herps. Kensfish carries sinking sticks in varieties such as spirulina, veggie, and earthworm w/spirulina. You can buy regular rabbit pellets in your grocery store and rabbit pellets sink. My FRTs are between 3 and 6 years old so, I also offer the older ones BS pellets, sinking commercial catfish pellets, and the occassional earthworm and/or chunk of fish fillet.

I basically feed pellets to my FRTs once a day. The rest of the day is spent grazing on elodea or vallisneria plants that I culture for them in outdoor bins. I'll alternate the live plants with frozen peas, green beans, sliced carrots, corn.

I am thinking of buying a can of herbivorous catfish sinking pellets and some pleco spirulina wafers to make up half of its diet. The other half would be vegetables, fruits, and some fish meat in a 2:1:1 ratio. Will this be okay?

Right now it is only taking romaine lettuce and sinking catfish shrimp pellets(which I will limit the use of once I get some plant based pellets)

Why not simply go by the list you asked me for? I never mentioned box turtle food or romaine lettuce (worthless) before.

BTW, the brands of box turtle food I've used all float which defeats your purpose.

Also box turtle ood is kinda protein high, you might want to try tortoise chow.

Oddball, I suppose I lucked out with mine. He (and three other FRTs) were raised in my friends AFR cichlid tank. The only living thing he has ever eaten was some crayfish, he's been with fish for about 5 years (two in my tank). You feed yours elodea? I'm going to have to try that.

The Zoomed type is only about 21% protein. Is that still too high?

Which pic are you refering to? My heater has a heater guard. I admit I didn't do much research before I bought it but I have been doing a ton of reading since then don't flame me too much:)

21% eh? That's lower than I expected. I feed my box turtle low fat dog chow mostly, with some fruit and bugs.

My FRT will only eat pellets, I've unsuccessfully tried fruit and veggies. I'm gonna give the elodea and val Oddball suggested a try, as it won't foul the water if it stays in there.
