Just wanted to share a couple pics of my new gar.

He's a little guy right now in a small tank to grow him up a little, but I am really looking forward to him getting some size on him. Right now I have him in with a small senegal bichir, and some feeders.
I've been watching this fish (and several others) in the LFS I work at since June labeled as a "marble line gar", and have been dying to get one. I'm guessing he's a Florida/spotted. Any input there?
He's doing great for me, and seems to be much happier than he was in the tank at work with some snakeskin gourami at work. Apparently the gourami were picking on him, because he's missing his front fins- one is a little stump, and the other one is almost completely gone. I'm hoping these will grow back, but if not, I guess I'll have a slightly less graceful than normal gar!

He hasn't eaten great at work since he was put in with the gourami (about a month, maybe 6 weeks ago), but before that he and his tankmates (we had 5 total) were getting 3-4 guppies each every day. The day I brought him home, he ate 5 guppies, and looked fit to burst. He's been extremely active in my tank, and I absolutely love watching him. Right now he's swimming up at the surface fighting the current from the filter, flipping through the bubbles.

How much should I really be feeding him? I hear some people say "as much as they'll eat" but he's in a new tank still cycling (i pulled a sponge filter out of another tank and put it in, so the cycle will happen super fast), and I don't want to throw in more than he'll eat.

I was also wondering, would he bother bottom-feeders, like dojo loaches?

Thanks!

That is an affirmative on your ID. Nice looking fish :)

Nice Florida/Spotted. Also...missing the front (pectoral) fins is natural at that size.

with proper feeding you will see his fins start coming in quickly. what are later plans for him when he is bigger?
