How can you tell is a male?

Fins are not necessarily an indication of sex. I say it's a male due to the body shape. It looks like a male to me. Vent it to be a 100% sure or post a pic.

I still think it's a male. Mine has the same vertical bars like that and he has somewhat rounded fins.

He's in with a 10" Texas. The Texas is pretty aggressive but they seem to be getting along just fine. Sometimes the Texas shows who's boss but the Jag doesn't seem to be intimidated. Hopefully everything goes well. The tank is only a 90 gal. I know eventually I'm gonna have to get a bigger tank but right now 90 gal. seems to be fine for two fish of that size.
