My new JD's and One green terror

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yes.. lol.. thats a female..

u can tell by the colors under the eye... Female have teal colors under its eye.. and are more rounder.. resembling a cartoon looking bomb.. (best word i can put it) I usually the aggression lies not in males, when young, but females.. I had 1 female and 1 male before and the female always picked on him... i changed that around cuz my friend had another female 3" he didnt want.. so now its peaceful.. I think ur group should be fine.. but once they become adults.. its better to have a higher female ratio or same.. cuz males will fight over one female...

Nice fish tho.. good luck!

Thanks alot for the info , i needed it. I noticed in some online pics that alot of the males have a big area on the lower jaw area that is blank of spangles and females have alot of blue or green spangles in the same area. The males look like somebody erased the spangles from the whole area. Is that reliable for sexing them ?

Well.. i get mix opinions from everyone.. some say males are the females.. and visa versa.. but to be safe.. just have two of each.. u can't go wrong with that..

But Jack Dempsey is one of the easier species to differentiate between Male and Female... Now Electric blue jack Dempsey.. thats a different story...

I only have one so far.. and theres no telling if they are male or female.. but most people think they are males.. No idea..

I've also heard of Golden Jack Dempsey... they look like red dovii....

Those JDs are gorgeous.

I know im gonna get some flack for this but can you believe i got them at petco for 3.99 ? Everybody also loves my burundi frontosa, i also got them at petco, they sure were not 3.99 LOL but were a quality burundi.

I dont know who their source is but they seem to do a good job on the few cichlids they carry now, at least at my store. I just let them get in the delivery and wait a few days (usually 4 or 5 days) then i go back and can tell by then if any are sick or ailing. Like the oscars looked terriable when i got the JD's and would not buy those but the jd looked fine, good scales, good color and fat bellies and they also had good clear eyes and were very active.

I know alot of people complain about petco and other big chain stores but i have kept cichlids many years and its maybe easier for me to pic and choose quality specimens than someone new to the hobby. I just thought i would share that tidbit of info.

I say if you can pick out a healthy specimen from Petco, the more to you. Not all of their fish are bad quality. I might be picking out a few fish from there myself. ;)
