My new little girl

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I am sure it is a female . I have raised quite a few of them and the color can as you say tell a lot but I believe the dorsal tells more .
I hate to show this crappy photo but take a look at the dorsal on my 14 1/2" 10 year old male .

How old can you tell, i always thought it was more color then fins due to alot of female cichlids do get pointy and sharp fins. But I only own 1 and it's about 3.5 inches and i hope its a male. You obviously know the fish so what exactly what about the dorsal makes him a male and her a female? Ohh and also thats one incredible fish you have there....

In some cichlids both male and female get pointed anal and dorsal fins as in the firemouth and severum . In the managuense the male gets a pointed dorsal fin but not the female . Also if you look at my big guy you will nitice the vertical bars are gone . The males pretty much lose them and the female usually keeps them although they fade some as they get older and you will see them more or less due to the lighting .
Hope that helps .

How old before you can tell? Also i wanted to thank you for raising this fish, i was on a web-site a long time ago that showed a picture of your male jag and how they were amazing and a note from you explaining how local water conditions and water changes are key to keeping large predators like this one. It was that article and your fish that inspired me to go out the next morning and buy one...Thanks Again

I honestly don't remember how old or big but I think they would have to be 4" or bigger to start getting an idea . I am 62 and have been keeping fish for 50 years this year . Almost all of my fish except for a few new additions are 10 to 14 years old and I never really paid much attention to when you could sex them unless I planned on breeding them . On your managuense watch for the point on the dorsal , it will start to get a point before the bars fade . Although a male managuense is IMO the showpiece of an aquarium the female is no slouch .
You have no idea how much it pleases me that my comments in that article and pictures helped and influenced someone . Thank you .

Schnauzer,

VERY NICE monsters you have. That girl's colors are exceptional. I see a little problem with your fishes, though... They're not IN MY TANK!!! :naughty:
Congratulations.

Best regards.

Daniel.
