My new madtom

I got a side view picture mms_picture.jpg I did a little reading on madtoms in captivity and found that they will start to swim around in the open once they are fully acclimated to the tank. Mine comes out when you turn out the lights and is eating earthworms and frozen silversides.

If you can get a better shot of the tail area, that would be great. But from the two photos you posted it looks like a bullhead.

Looks like a yellow bullhead to me....you can't mistake that head...

I can see the tail very clear so it's 100% yellow bullhead. These yellows are very aggressive.

As you said he seems to be too big for a madtom. Very few madtoms that reached 4 1/2 to 5". Better get rid of him, since yellow are one of fast growing fishes and he don't have any problems to put a pickerel away.

I'm still not convinced he is a bullhead. I catch yellow, brown, and snail bullheads all the time. The tail of this fish is very blocky. I found him under a rock in a very swift flowing stream. When I lifted the rock he darted around in every which direction instead of swimming away. I'll try to get a better picture of him. You still can't see him too well in this picture.

Now I can see him better he looks closer to 4". There is no immediate problem with him harming my pickerel. My pickerel could eat him and is a little over twice his size, but the madtom/bullhead stays hidden most of the time.

I'm not worried about pickerel eating him, I'm more worried about the bullhead eating the pickerel when it gets bigger.
