Just thought I would introduce my new Midas to MFK lol.

I have been looking for one for a long time maybe 12 months now - no place was stocking any so I went through the route of asking my local store to ask their supplier to get one in for me.

I really hope he/she is a pure specimen - though I am sure somebody will let me know on here shortly.

Here it is - I hope it turns out to be a male. It is being kept in my new 100g with two JD's - one Herichthys Carpintis and an Oscar. Please don't tell me that the tank is to small or their mix is not right becuase my current set up is very peaceful and is going very well - they have all been grown from juveniles.

It is around 3 inch in length.

Nice, trust me you wont hear none of that from me lol. I'm new to the fish game, so I'm just checking around to get ideals for my own tanks.

A lot of people do say that you shouldnt mix this with that and they are right - but i have always experimented with my set ups - anything that didn't work I just took back to the store for store credit or gave to one of my friends who keeps Cichlids too.

I know long term this Midas might rule the tank but I am hoping that his age compared to the others will create a nice balanced set up.

Kingleon what are your plans so far ?

Joecoulson - I will treat this as an experiment to see if they can all co-exist. As soon as there are any issues I won't be stubborn, I will remove whatever needs to be removed.

At what size will Midas generally start to show their true temperament? So far I can already see it oozing with confidence, it doesn't seem phased at all when bigger Cichlids are swimming by him.

There's no way to say for sure if it's a pure midas or not without knowing where it came from.

As to your setup...I've done a lot of experimenting myself and in fact if I listed the full stock of my 75 gallon right now I'd get all kinds of flack. As long as you're prepared for problems if they arise then experiment away. You never know unless you try. However, just my 2 cents, I wouldn't hold my breath if I were you. ;)

The one problem with this type of experimenting with the more aggressive fish like a midas or red devil is that often times you won't see any problems until one day you wake up to a lot of dead fish. I hope that doesn't happen but just know it is a possibility.

Midas and red devils generally reach maturity between 5-6" or so. That's around the time when you want to start watching even closer.

And to add, it happens like overnight too. One day mine was getting pushed around (although he didn't seem to bothered by it) the next he was almost killing my JD.

Mine also happened around 5-6"

I agree with Jason S. and Joe C. They are beautiful cichlids with loads of personality. Mine used to hide behind things when I first got him. When I picked him out at the store he was guarding a cave and keeping all of the others away. At 3" he banged the glasss. Now he is about 5" (maybe a bit more) and very aggressive. He doesn't like anything in or around his tank. All the dithers are dead. But I love his personality. He's my favorite fish. You chose a good cichlid. I hope things work out well for you and your stock.
