My new Midas

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
For now mine is just exploring and searching everywhere - swimming away from the bigger guys in there.

Random hypothetical question here - but I'll ask it anyway....what growth rate can you expect if you keep on top of everything, water change, diet etc?

Thats great thanks for the info.

I really hope he does grow and stay relatively peaceful - though I am sure that won't happen. By then I will search for a cheap 75 second hand aquarium for it.

I will post some updates once he grows.

Yeah - its fins are really nice. I really hope it turns out to be a male so that it can grow a little bigger.

Has anyone had indication yet as to whether it may turn out to be male or female?

VERY nice.

The one problem with this type of experimenting with the more aggressive fish like a midas or red devil is that often times you won't see any problems until one day you wake up to a lot of dead fish. I hope that doesn't happen but just know it is a possibility.

This is true... my texas proved it... bought smaller than the rest of tank one by one they all died as she got bigger... bought a midas male that was bigger to breed red texas, he died too.... The amount of damage a big cichlid can do to another fish in one night... you probably don't want your gf or kids if you have any waking up to the smashing noises or to walk up to the tank and not even recognize your fish lol....

Your tank is too small... if you ever want this to work go buy a 150 right now....lol seriously... even then it might not work, that Dempsey will get pwned and it's not "my fishes personality" that is the problem it's "my fishes territory" that is the problem... Good Luck i wish you the best!!!

Thanks Gasha - I will definately keep updating my thread as they all grow - and like I said as soon as I see any bullying - even minor bullying, I will remove them.

I really can't see a Dempsey being pushed around that badly by a Midas - Yeah Midas are very aggressive and powerfully built and could easily dispatch sub dominant males. My male is dominant and can handle himself. Only when the Midas is 10 inch plus will I worry about him.

Midas destroy much tougher cichlids than Jack Dempseys. Keep your eye on the situation. Like it was said before, one day everything is fine and then the next thing there's ripped and torn fish. I hope that this isn't the case for you, but don't think that a JD can compare to the aggression of an angry Midas. They are in a different league.
