My new pick up - Cuban Gar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Perhaps it is just the picture angle giving the wrong color but that does not look like a true cuban gar( Atractosteus tristoechus) but a tropical gar ( Atractosteus tropicus). It you want to count his lateral lines, if it has less than 56 it is a tropical gar. If it has around 70, it is a cuban . Of course a cuban has a very wide bite and is more olive in coloring.

Trust me it's a cuban gar, not a tropical.

It looks nothing like a tropical. It is all one colour with no markings, and it's a shiny bronze colour with an orange stripey tail.

BTW that pic was when it was around 6 inches, it's now 9 inches.

And on top of that it comes from Cuba lol.

i need one

tropicals and cubans look completely different.

These pics are not mine, they belong to E_americanus from AP.

Here is a juvenile tropical...

And here is a cuban that is probably around the foot mark. Mine looks exactly like this one, same colour, same orange stripey tail, only difference is at 9 inches mine has a faint, half disappeared light stripe down the side.

Right, that's why I thought it must be the picture because they are really quite different, so it would be hard to mistake the two. A while back a lot of people were buying "cuban" gars and they were tropical gars. And of course they were guaranteed that were from Cuba but we all know how that goes.

OK sure. I am still kind of surprised you thought it was a tropical from that pic though.

It's a bad pic and the fish looks significantly different to that, more bronze with an orange tail. But still, tropicals look very very different even to that pic.

BTW until recently all the cuban gars came from farms in Asia, so I doubt people were claiming they were from Cuba because until recently they were banned from export in Cuba, so that would have been illegal.

And I know for a fact this was imported from Cuba to me in Spain.
