My new Planted 20 gal setup

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was also curious - w/o surface aggatation, my tank has developed a slight oil (protien) slick on top. Does this effect the plants in anyway? Im not running a filter on the tank, and will likely maintain my 33-40% water changes at the end of the week. No fish present.

Also any recommendations where I can obtain a decent priced solenoid? The regulator i'm using is a generic/industrial single gauge regulator fitted for use with a paintaball co2 canister. It works fine, granted it doesn't come with any frills. When I turn on the light in the morning, I also turn on CO2 manually. Doesnt work too well on occasions when I have to leave early for school or work and return late, and thus looking for a way to automate it, but also not burn a hole in my wallet, as that is that is what monster fish are for. :)

Btw- My plants are growing already. :) Even some of the leaves which were yellow/brown when i planted the tank have turned nice a bright green. I'll update w/ a picture shortly, as to the progress of the tank.

As promised - here is an update of my tank, after just about two weeks later. I added only one new plant to the left side, else, everything else has been growing, esp the ludwigia. That thing is going buckwild. Any tips on the proper way to prune it, to make it grow bushy, instead of tall?

I separated the ludwigia a bit, as it has almost doubled in size and the leaves up on top have turned nice a red. I noticed that at night, the red leaves almost close up like the way some flowers do. That was an interesting sight.

I also cut a few pieces off and added it to the left side, with my attempts to prune. The first picture is the one from 2 weeks ago. The second is the new plant i added. The next few are pictures of the tank taken today.

Enjoy!

The red is pretty normal for ludwigia's when they get real good light. The 'new plant' kinda looks like sunset hygro, but the picture isn't at the right angle to tell for sure.

Ludwigia's tend to grow tall, rather than busy. You can try cutting them regularly, but they often grow too fast to stay bushy.

I'm liking the driftwood addition, it helps with the general shape of the tank.

Lookin good.
