My new red 7" aro

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If your tank's light set up is wrong, the fish will develop droop eye as well. Doesn't mean feeding certain food and it will develop droop eye.

Thanks for this information, can you enlighten us with what is wrong and what is right in comes of lighting set-up? Thanks!

Hello!

Thank you for the kind words.. I hope the arowana can grow nice and strong!!

I noticed pellets are often quoted as recommended food? Any particular reason for that?

I would also feed it Hikari Food Sticks. Frozen foods such as Tilapia, Silver Sides, and Shrimps will not cause drop eye and are some of the healthiest food sources. If your canister isn't an Fx5 I would upgrade your filtration when your Arowana gets larger.

Approximately how large can the fish go before I need to upgrade the filter?

Koji,
Could you elaborate on that? Are you talking about type of light or placement?

Thanks,

Pellets have all the required nutrients and color enhancers your arowana requires, Otherwise you got feed different foods all the time which is time consuming and expensive.Another good thing about pellets is that it can be stored easily/ Does not spoil fast and doesnt get our hands dirty..Feeding MP does.. :P
But i would say you feed hikari as staple and maybe once or twice a week feed MP... MP with shell is good for enhancing the red colour for red arowana's
IMO,you can feed with shell only after 10" as with shell for young arowana's is not easy on its digestion

for anyolne to claim they know what causes drop eye, they would be lying.
there is no certainty to the cause.
wild arowanas get it too.

could be genetic, injury, food or a combination.

i have never had drop eye in my asian aros or jardinii -

good water IS KEY.
shrimp is good, but i find that a combo of shrimp and pellet and insect has optimal growth for my experience.

i average more than 1 inch per month untill 40 cms, then slows down a bit,
minimum 1 inch i reckon then you are feeding right.

in saying that
variety is key.
i breed my own mealworms so i feed mealworms, and pellets gut loaded into mealworms.

i would suggest also looking at a bigger tank, your tank is too small.

always over filter. over filtration is better than under filtration. you cant go wrong with over filtration. fish NEVER enjoy a small amount of amonia, it reduces life span, potential in size too

Hello guys,

I couldn't resist the allure of arowanas and got myself one red piece.
It's 7 inches long now and I hope it'll grow nice and strong..

The LFS recommends to feed it market shrimps, but I read something about droopy eyes if you feed shrimps.

I'm not too comfortable with feeding it live food so are there any alternatives?

My tank size is a standard 4 x 2 x 2 with a canister filter.

Cheers,
New Aro keeper

I would suggest super worms. And you can gut-load them with pellets to ensure that your aro gets good nutrients and everything :)

If you can get it to accept pellets, stick to pellets... When giving live food, the risk of catching disease is always there... and when that happens, you would suffer, too --- from worrying and anxiety.. LOL.
