20k is a realistic estimate actully...unless you want to end up with something thats broken every weekend. It's not just about preformance but rather reliable preformance.

As I said, it all depends on your ability and the level you want to compete at. If you're a noob who's never owned a RWD car and is just getting into it then dumping $20k into a car is going to be a big waste of money. Over here I could buy and build a reliable drift-worthy car for around half that amount in NZ$.
