So i picked up a ~4 inch ruby red spilo several days ago. I have had fish for a long time, but it is my first piranha. i won't lie so far he is not what I expected. I have him in a 26 bow with fairly low lighting, driftwood and fake plants. He is incredibly skiddish. He is always darting and hiding. Is there anything to do to make him more comfortable? I had to remove the lava rock from the tank due to him repeatively injuring himself.
Also right now I am target feeding him fresh fish fillet and krill with a skewer. He will not approach any food on his own. Any advice to get him to calm down enough to eat? I plan on getting him on pellets eventually, but it probably won't be for a while.

the answer to the question that you seek is time. time will heal all with your fish.

But....it probably never will be what you expect if you've been drinking the piranha kool aid.

Any pics though? Where'd you get it from?

it hasn't settle down yet, give it some time.
try keep the light off for a few days first and don't have to feed it for few days.
let it settle down a bit first the try to drop a bite size fillet in see if it eats. if it doesn't eat infront of you then just leave the room and come back later. once it get used to you it will be less skititsh.
when you approach the tank try to do it slowly so it won't freak out, no suddent movements cuz the tank is pretty small and it will most likely run into glass.
can you post pix on the setup?

Will try to get a pic up eventually. He never stays still long enough to take one. Picked him up from aquascape. Pedro had a large selection it took me a while to pick him out. He has really nice gold down his belly and red around the throat.

Yeah he has a great selection. A lot interesting stuff. He has tons of p's. I was looking between the ruby reds and the blue diamonds. The spilo I got is pretty good looking. He has some really good looking ones the next size up, but its more then I wanted to spend.

I think all new keepers of piranha are exspecting a more aggressive fish unless of course you buy a Mac.macs are aggressive right out of the box!

I wasn't expecting an aggressive fish at all to be honest. I was expecting a much less skiddish fish. I have enough aggression between my gold wolf and fahaka. It wouldn't bother me at all if the spilo was low key. I just want to be able to see it.
Over the years ps really didn't do much for me. The reason I got interested in them was because I saw how stunning an adult blue diamond was. Then when I came across the ruby reds, I had to get one.

Will probably give the garlic a go soon. Bought some to soak pellets in, but can try it on the krill and fillet.
