My new tank and leporinus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I had one...returned it to the lfs after about two weeks. The first week he was a sweetheart, seemed more scared and shy than mean. Which is what the label on the lfs tank said he was...I should have listened lol. By week two he started coming out more and playing with the royal green terror that I had (which is also a fin nipper). Then I came home from work one day and found him mouth deep in the side of my blood parrot, literally eating her guts out! So I'd suggest keeping it with similar sized fish with a similar aggression level....and nothing too expensive ;)

The columbus zoo used to have a trio of these guys that were well over 24" :) i had some in my earlier days got them up to 12-14" and sold them off due to eye biting. If im not mistaken they can get up to 3ft in the wild.

I had one for about 4-5 years. He was raised together with ca/sa cichlids, oscar, jack dempsey, midas ect. For your size tank its gonna be tough to choose tank mates because most that can take aggression usually grow big. You can do green terror, jd, ect. They can grown fast too and from what i see their aggression (unless you get that one fish thats just relentless) is that they go through phases. From 3-6" they will be chasers from time to time , claim a territory and as long as he's not bullied your fine. Then between 6-8" they go through this teenager phase where they get a bit more forceful, especially with other bottom dwellers, lots of chasing, and if a fish cant handle it and cant show him whos boss, they get nipped fins. After that it will settle down and go back to just staying in their cave, or special territory and except for the occasional chase out you wont see much. I would say this. In a tank that is not large and especially long i do not recommend these fish for a permanent home in anything smaller than a 90. They are very fast and when they chase if they dont have enough space at 7-9"+ they can dart right into a wall, decoration or anything else causing serious injury. So summary, robust cichlids slightly bigger than the leporinus is my tank mate recommendation.
