My New Tems

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nice fish, I hope the ich clears up quick!

Thank you, I hope so too. This is my first time dealing with ich. My LFS is usually pretty good about not having ich in their tanks. Honestly, I didn’t notice anything in their tanks, and my fish didn’t show it until just today, three days later.

With the temp up to 85ish, and 1 tbs of aquarium salt per 5 gallons, does anyone know how long it should be before I start to see some results?

I have always cranked the heat up a little higher 88/89 degrees because by the time you see the white spots on the body there is definitely some on the gills of the fish, if I remember correctly it will have to be that high for 7 to 10 days I would say at least 2/3 days but you need to keep the treatment going to kill the specimens in the water column even if there are no spots on the fish anymore. I’m sure you know this stuff already though :)

X2 but I do a little longer prob two weeks just to be safe and crank up some airstones.

I have four air stones in the tank already. I do have the temp above 86 right now. Also, I put in 1 tbs of API aquarium salt per 5 gallons into the tank, but I’ve seen people recommend as high as 2 tsp per gallon, which is about 3-1/3 tbs per 5 gallons. Do you guys think that I should add more salt?

Salt treament for Ich is best at 3ppt of salt, which is 1 tablespoon per gallon. I like to spread the total dosage over the course of 3 days, starting at 1 tsp per gallon on the first day, increasing to additional 1tsp per gallon on the 3rd day, and finally one last dosage of 1 tsp per gallon on the 3rd day, which would bring me to 1 tbs per gallon total. Salinity is maintained for 10+days, adding back in any salt removed during a regular water change.

You should vacuum the bottom every day to remove the ich cysts.

Ok, I am going to go home during lunch and do a 10 gallon water change. At that time, I’ll replace the salt from the water change and go ahead and add another tbs per 5 gallons of tank volume.

Ok, so I changed out about 30% of the water. During the process, I added in enough salt to bring the concentration up to about 2 tbsp per 5 gallons. I also raised the heater to 90, so it will heat it up over the next hour or two.

I will not feed or do water changes until I get this cleared up. I will also add another 1 tbsp per 5 gallons sometime tomorrow, and then again the day after. That will put me up around 4 tbsp per 5 gallons. If I need to add more then I will to bring it up to the full 5 tbsp per 5 gallons. It just seems like that’s a lot of salt for freshwater fish.

If your worried about the amount of salt then just leave it out and just try the high temp and water changes, it’s always worked for me
