I've been wanting a solo bruiser for a while, and trimacs have always been near the top of my list. I picked a single male up from Jeff Rapps last week - he's about 3.5 inches currently. First few days all he did was hide behind a piece of driftwood, not eating anything, but just a couple of days later he's up at the top of the water when I turn on the lights in the morning and any time I walk in the room begging for food.

So far so good, really hoping for an outgoing, interactive fish as my festae pair is beautiful but they keep to themselves for the most part.

Does anyone have any pics or info on the Rio Naranjo strain of trimacs? I know they're supposed to have a more green/dark red coloration vs the bright yellow trimacs, but that's all I've been able to gather. Hopefully someone has a pic or two of an adult male with the different coloration so I can get an idea of what to expect.

Here a few poorly shot cell phone pics for now (sorry!) - I'll get some better shots with a DSLR in a few days when I have some time. He definitely isn't bright yellow, more of a turquoise type sheen on him at the moment.

And here's his only tankmate, an L114 pleco. This pic was taken when he was with the festae pair. They harassed him pretty good when they had fry in the tank, so excuse the frayed tail here. It's pretty much back to normal now in his new tank.

Trimacs are my favorite. Good luck with him!!

I saw that strain on Jeff's list and wondered how different they were from the traditional yellow trimac strain. Please keep us posted as he grows and colors up. I like his profile already...already a bit of a nuchal hump starting to form. :)

Thanks everyone! I'll definitely update this thread periodically with new pics and info. I haven't seen much of anything as far as specifics on this strain, so I'll at least be able to provide pics of one throughout its growth.

I've got Rio Naranja as well - from COTA vs. Jeff. These are my first Trimacs, but I see varying color - sometimes yellow, like you see in other pics - and sometimes olive. Here are a few pics of mine (same fish at different times) w/ different coloring based on mood - under same lighting.Trimac 2-21-2017.JPG Trimac 2 2-21-2017.JPG Trimac 1_0046.JPG Trimac 2 10-21-2016.JPG

Awesome, thanks for those pics! Looks like they're pretty similar overall, but maybe with a bit more of an olive/green sheen to them in some instances. I'm OK with that, since I love how they look normally but wanted to see what the difference was with this locale.

I think I may end up switching out the black sand for something lighter in color eventually if he doesn't brighten up some. I had my female festae in this tank to heal after the male beat her up pretty bad, and she stayed pretty close to black the whole time. I thought it was just due to being injured, but the trimac is staying dark as well. We'll see what happens in a few month's time - I'll leave it alone and see if he brightens up on his own.
