I was thinking of "mandarin ducks" to my pond.
This is a small species, that not touches fish, and not to mutch plants.

And they are very beutiful birds...

Time for an update again.
The "lake" is now full. :D
Today it was ice on the water, so winter is not far away.
Dont think i have time to do a lot more before snow is coming.
But there is lot more to do.....:nilly:

Well, here are some pics.

Last picture shows a 60 cm Kohaku under ice, around 3 meter deep in the water.

Looking good, nice to see some fish in there.

Do you mind answering a couple of questions?

What temp does it go down to in winter over there?

Are you letting the surface freeze totally or leaving a flowing area to allow for gas exchange in the water?

Well, this is first year with so deep water, so i dont know yet about the temp at the bottom.
Today, it was 6,4 celsius at 3 meter deep. Thats 2 degees more than in my old pond that was 1,5 meter deep.

Normal winter can bring airtemp down to -20 C. or more.

There wil be some heating system when the pond is finish, that hopfully will give 8-10 degrees at the bottom, winter time.

My Koi lives outside hole year, and it has worked ok for 7-8 years. In a lot smaller pond.

It freezes totally over, with 30-50 cm thick ice.

Thanks for answers
