Last few days have been a blur by attempts to self induce memory loss. I still can't seem to wrap my mind around what's happened. Obviously hasn't sunk in yet, cause still feels like a bad dream I'm going to wake up from........

I want to know if any of you have seen rays wiped out by something only contracted through physical touching - one ray to another?

I brought home some new rays last weekend. Was told they were long term captives, all QT'd - you know the typical bull crap that ray peddlers whisper in your ear. I knew that 2/3 rays were with the seller for 6+ months so guess what I did? Yup, no qt. Straight in with my babies, literally.

First goes into the juvie tank, other 2 go in with my pups. I notice one of those 2 rays breathing hard but assume shipping stress. Next day no change. 2 days later a few of my rays start showing hard breathing. No biggie - will just Prazi and hope it goes away. Next day no ones eating. Then the nightmare begins......

First my pride and joy. My favorite Marble - of ANY I've ever SEEN. Ever. And I bred him. Whenever times were tough in the past all I had to do was look at that ray and I would be immediately inspired. Instant gratification knowing all the hard work, lost sleep, and money spent was worth it, cause such a special creature was born because of all the hard work. A blessing. Now dead.

Following day another dies, next day 2 more. Fast forward to tonight and here I sit for the first time in 4 years with only a single cb Marble in my pup tank. All the lil Marbles I've bred over the last 4 years all gone but 1.

Now is where it gets weird. There's a divider in this pup tank of mine. The 3 rays on the one side are still alive. Still eating. The rays on the other side (ALL my CB Marbles) all dead but the new one. Seems every ray that was touched by the new one is dead. There's FW Cuda, 2 Morays, and a Tiger Scat all on this side of the divider as well. None of the fish have quit eating, yet the rays on this side all dead in less the 4 days. Am I crazy or is what I'm thinking possible? Could there be something that is only transferable by physical contact or is it just a matter of time before these other 3 rays die too? Here's a curve ball - one of those 3 rays alive behind the divider is a ray that was just born 2 Thursdays ago here.

Really wish the fish I bought would have just died before I got them home. Wish they killed fish I bought, but to sit there and watch EVERY friggin pup you've produced over the last 4 years curl on you? This has been nothing short of excruciating. Never seen a tank of rays wiped out so fast. Wish I didn't have so much stuff, I'd just bail from the hobby but after a few days of trying to re home stuff I find it nothing shy of pointless leaving me no choice but to stay in this hobby which is now my own un-escapable hell.

Obviously a lesson can be learned here...... Do NOT trust anyone. QT everything.

Thanks to Iowa having zero monster fish keepers I don't even have the option of giving up or I would. Having no fish in the house at all would be the deepest breath of relief I've ever taken. Instead it's minute after minute of worrying what's going to die next. The uneasy feeling is really reminiscent of hospital waiting rooms. Simply sickening.

It's funny how the difference between your most successful year of fish keeping and the worst can be a few weeks.

What isn't funny is all the unanswered questions...... Hope we can get some answers from necropsies but need a ray to live through the long weekend to be able to make it in without freezing.

That sucks.

Where do you send rays for necros?

Bloody hell mate that's terrible news!!! So sorry to hear of your loss.
I have no idea what could have caused this but definitely sounds like the new acquisitions were to blame.
Sincerely hope you work things out bud.All the best with what ever you do mate

Horrible. That's a shame Al. To all die so quickly in rapid succession I'm not sure what to make of it.

They've been going to the university of Mississippi.

Thanks Jim. No question in my eyes on the new aquisitions, everything has been going really well here with the lil cb Marbles (until now). Litters are never big but the quality is great. Just a shame so many years of work can all be just gone in a matter of days.

Wow! That sucks Alan. You've had such bad luck years back. Things gotten better - now this. I know it's a stressful feeling just having one or two sick rays. But man you've been threw it with this. If anyone can pull out of this you will. You've been a great Ray keeper over the years. Keep your head up. Good Luck!
