How is it floating like that?

It's an old science-class experiment. The smaller tank is full of water and is being supported by the water in the larger tank. You can try it with a large glass and a smaller one. It creates a vacuum.

That setup is pretty interesting. Ill be waiting to see how you stock it...

How did you attatch the 2.5 to the other tank?

X2...Looks too centered to be just floating. Very nice...Do tell/show:popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:

What is wrong with you people? Did nobody pay attention in physics? It CAN'T be floating. It is supported. And if the top tank is sealed, it will never spill out. Just like the cat water towers. There is negative pressure in the top tank because gravity is still pulling it downward, and if the tank weren't well-anchored, which it is, it would sink.

The smaller tank is supported by the water in it, as well as the water in the first tank. That's a form of floatation.

I need to get my experiment kit back out! I wonder if I could do this with say a 55g and a 150g? How would the water in the top tank get filtered without disrupting the vacuum? Somebody put the experiment on youtube or something...I must have skipped that science class:ROFL:

but many times it would topple, not sink, but topple over.

ok, should have taken step by step pictures. First their is no pump to push the water up there. it is purley by vaccum.
Second I first removed the rim on the 2.5. then measured out the amount of rim i needed to remove on the 5.5 and removed it. next i inverted the 2.5 and lowed into the correct position in the 5.5. i placed it about 1.5 to 2 inches inside of the 5.5. then i placed a large amount of aquarium silicon that i had laying around from a previous reseal. i then used the rim pieces to actually create braces. 2 long braces run beside the 2.5(outside of view) and are siliconed to the side of the tank and to the rim of the 5.5. Thier also is 6 small pieces that are bracing it in the front. These all are secured by silicone. it is all secure by aqaurium silicone. all of it.
I filled the upper tank in a very tricky way. i tied air line tubing to a chopstick.:grinno: lol. and i carefull put it at the top and filled the tank. as the water got close to the top of the 5.5 i sucked air out of the 2.5. When it got to the point were it would break the seal i stopped. then i waited untill it filled up again and repeat untill full.

this build dint cost me a cent due to me having the extra stuff lying around, and it only took about 2 hours. im not gonna lie this thing(purly due to the sized tanks i used, too close in measurements) is gonna be a pain. BUT it looks awesome and is a true conversation piece as well as unique.

Indeed! Would've loved to see step by step photos:D...I know I know...Picky picky picky:ROFL:

Awesome job! Can we see pics of the bracing?
