My other pickup today...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What is it that looks odd? Is it the coloring and markings? or the shape? or something else? Should I take it back for a refund? Tell me now before it's too late.

Just feed him some good stuff and he should warm up and blush those colors out he looks like a keeper to me. What size tank u keepin him in balton??

He's temporarily in a 28 gallon for now. Next week he'll go into the 253 gallon along with the new Lyonsi.

looks like a gold mota or normal mota not a bad fish thats a lillt pricey but i would of paid that much for that fish nice pick up

Ouch $40!! Paid 8.99 for my 3 inch Red Tiger Mota. It looks to be a nice fish though.

Maybe it's the angle of the pix. The fish just looks a little elongated and wide on the forehead. BUT it's not like those types of differences don't occur naturally so IMO there's nothing wrong with it. I've seen some really long motas and lois.

I got my first motas a while ago and I lucked out on them. They were $5 each and didn't have any kind of label at the shop.

I knew they were motas and was happy enough at that but at about 2.5" they both started showing a lot of that nice red/orange color, the female moreso than the male since the male is more spotty. I only got two and they turned out to be male/female as well. That was the icing on my mota cake. lol

The picture was taken last month and already they look nicer. The female's 3.5" and the male's 3". The red/orange keeps getting richer as they get older.

It could be a Parachromis Loisellei, there's an absence of markings on the upper body towards the dorsal fin. It's also a little bit thin looking, if it is a Loisellei then it's body will get deeper. Mota's have distinct markings on upper body

First photos the Loisellei, 2nd's the Mota's

sweet loisellei. :grinyes:

Edit: I found a Rapps pic of a long lois for reference.

Personally, when it comes to the long forms of these fish I find it really difficult to tell a freddy from a mota from a lois. :nilly:

I thought it was a high price too that's why I stated how much I shelled out for this little guy. I have to point out though it's the first motaguense I've ever seen around this area so I thought it seemed kinda rare at the time. Supply and demand ya know what I mean? ;)
