My Paludarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
An idea just came to me.
One I am not familiar with so hopefully one of you can answer.
Would adding carnivorous plants help in combatting the millipedes slowly? Or will they reproduce to fast?

We have some native carnivorous plants we could add as well if we can source them online.
Honestly I’ve never heard of using carnivorous plants for millipedes and isopods - one way to find out I suppose.
Jumping spiders are pretty cute and easy to fall in love with.
A carabid beetle would work.

The 55gal has been dismantled. It was time and it reached the end of it's life.
It turned into Jaws the mission but now I sit with a blank slate again.

Some shots from a month or two before breaking it down.

And an underwater shot. The rainbows have grown nicely and their colors are fantastic now.

I hope you kept the chain loaches.
Of course.
My loaches are all staying. the only fish I am definitely getting rid of are the three red tail black sharks.
I am contemplating giving up the Strawberry leporinus as well.

Some last pics before the dismantle was done. I am waiting on some substrates and PU foam before I can start the build. I have been pouring over the design and style for a while now and just had to make a decision. Then, as always, I think bout how to make it better which means more work, effort and time. So I may just revert to my initial lower input idea. I will see when supplies arrive.

Of the 6 albino bristle nose added, 5 remain. They have grown well and fattened up trying to keep up with this tank cleaning. Of the 8 or so I have I have seen 1, possibly 2 males. Not actively trying to breed them, but if they do spawn in a tank I can almost not give them away. Less than a dollar a fish at 1" long here. And that is retail price.

A rare top down view.

The rainbows have grown well and developed great color. I think I have 4 males and 5 females.

All that work undone only to be reworked. Why as aquarists are we so prone to making more work for ourselves. LOL. It is a temporary art. Always changing, never the same, with an inevitable end.
First was removing the mass of plants - some of those roots needed prying with tender fingers to not cause too much damage.

The right side rocks came out "easily" enough but was a lot of slow work.

This is where the "fun" ended.

This was a few days in and a fair amount of time spent. The kids learnt a few new choice words at this point.

I was over it and not in the mood for sore fingers. I needed to keep the rocks and wood with as little damage as possible or tool marks. By the time I was done, i could not use my fingerprint to unlock my phone for a good few days.

I have not had time to set up the 55gal yet. I have all the parts, all the tools I need and just need some time. Work has been hectic these past 5 months. But summer time is nearing and I will soon have some time off. The that tank is going to get it.

In the meanntime the three paludarium riparian tanks have been slowly doign their thing.

The shrimp vase. There are at least 2 males and 3 females left in this tank. The water is clean and good. But for the life of me I cannot get them to breed. I am wondering if the plants are not taking in too many nutrients leaving the water deficient? Although, they are all well-colored, active and a good size.

This cabomba just keeps growing. it has been in here for years. nearly lost it a few times when no one was there to check on it for 1-2 months.

The roots of the pothos has taken up some space in the tank. There are to vines about 2.5-3m (8'-10''). From somewhere a snail hitched a ride. Looks like MTS snail which I am happy with but have never purchased one.

This was set up by three female students. They were not too keen on the whole thing but got into it once they found out that can plant any of the plants wherever they want. Our aquaponics setup was put on hold so the el silverado endlers came in to the tank for a while.

We opted to go sparse on the planting and watch it fill in over the next 1-2 years as we did with the vivarium tank.

This little vivarium has been doing well for the most part. The soil stays too wet and a thicker layer of drainage should have been used. The insects thrive and plants grow looking better each month.
The mess left by the horde of little millipedes. that wood pulp.

The monte carlo is just not taking as I thought is would. It may be due to the lower lighting combined with the excessively wet soil.

The grass next to the monte carlo is A okay.

One of my favorite plants in the setup. Did not know if it would survive in such a wet spot.
