My Paludarium

To be honest, that was the original goal.
But students dropped the ball and didn't get the air vents and circulation done so the tank gets too hot in summer months.
May sort it out in the upcoming year.
Have been looking at what else may work in there.

I added some floating plants as the algae, even though I wanted it, was getting a little too much. Especially, the stringy algae.
The new light is working well. Next mission is attaching light bracket and new pump.
Still not sure what fish i want as a centre piece.
Toyed with the idea of Dwarf or pearl gouramis. Contemplated one of the better species besides splendens.
Still not sure if I want to add shrimp or not. This means I have not added the Dwarf chain loaches yet. But they are happy in their dedicated 20gal.
Also need to find time to work on riparian section. Slight design flaw. But not too hard to fix. Just need time.

Went on a 3 hour round-trip hike to some small waterfalls to collect plants for the paludarium and riparian tank.
Well worth the effort. This country has some stunning scenery.
All pools, even one that was about 50cm wide and 90cm long with a depth of maybe 10 to 12cm at its deepest, had fish crabs and shrimp in them.
Crystal clear, very cool, rain fed mountain streams.
The smallest of those elephant ears leaves was about 50cm to 60cm.
Well worth the effort. This country has some stunning scenery.

Now that the weather is changing from sweltering to only really hot and humid, I am inclined to do some more hikes. The hike worked well as it didn't rain for a while before.
Here, during an afternoon thunderstorm, those hikes and little streams can turn into dangerous places to visit making for a treacherous hike back.

Even though it is a hike and a half with a few tricky spots, kids and elderly people manage it. The dog thought he'd died and gone to heaven.
In the riparian tank the kuhli loaches have been out and about and not skittish at all. Even placing my glass in front of the tank and taking sips doesn't seem to bother them. I read somewhere about giant kuhli loaches (P. myersi) being more outgoing. I wonder if I don't have common kuhli's (P. kuhlii) and giant kuhli's mixed as the new ones are noticeably larger.
They hang out in this corner a lot as the stream empties into the tank here and the food sinks down with the current.
