I haven't kept a pike cichlid in years(many years). But I recently bought one, I think it's a saxitilis, about 4 inches or so, and I have him in a tank alone for now. I originally had him in my cichlid community tank, but my Midas and Green Terror kept picking on him and I got tired of him having gapped fins(and fearing that he'd be killed), so I put him in his own tank. Since I've done this he eats like there's no tomorrow and greets me at the front of the tank whenever he sees me. When I open the top of the tank he comes and welcomes the net to see what kind of fish is going to swim out of it for him to eat. If I put 3 rosey reds in the tank he eats all three at once, stuffing his mouth. I haven't had a fish that was a predator like this since when I owned snakeheads, many, many years ago. Is this the typical behavior of pike cichlids?? I think I'm hooked on these bad boys now!!!

I would say that is the typical behavior of crenicichlas. If their mouth's could open bigger and wider, they'd eat just like Peacock Bass. Just stuffing their mouths fool.

agreed

my sveni does the same thing. if there's food in the tank, he will put as much as he can in his mouth and try for more

I've got a menezesi, it isn't especially personable but it will happily gorge itself. Its feeding behavior is interesting; more like a snake than my other fish.

My bellycrawler is a glutton as well. Will basically eat anything it can fit in it's mouth lol and she's only 4".

They have impressive appetites but not quite a snakehead. When I had SH they were beasts. They would tear fish in half when they couldn't eat the whole thing. I had a 6" redline that ate a 5" shiner one time. I don't see any cren's doing anything like that. But don't get me wrong I love Cren's.

True indeed. I have seen snakeheads get a tad bit more vicious when eating, but the pikes come pretty close.

Do any pikes have a mouth full of teeth like snakeheads???
