My Plan....

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd have to say the texas, they're such a beautiful fish, they can be very aggressive but I would say on average less so than Jags, plus they don't take up as much stocking space so going for the tex may give you more room for other SA/CA cichlids. Green terrors are lovely.

Id say if you want to keep them all, get the jag now. My experience with the parachromis species is if its brought in as the low fish on the totem pole, it tends to be less of a harasser or outright murderer.

If it were me, Id get the jag & carpintis (if I recall, thats what you were getting, not a TRUE texas), then when things get crowded, get rid of the O's & JDs & keep the jewels & carpintis and throw the convicts in (plus about 6-10 more cons). The jewels are quick enough to get away and the cons are ballsy enough to not be scared of the bigger fish. I think convicts as dithers works out WAY better than danios, tetras etc...plus cons are some cool *** fish, especially in large groups.

Not into GT's personally - I find them very pretty but just don't really grab me...

The jag is a bit of an impulse option for me more than anything. I was speakig to the guy from the LFS on saturday - this is the one I'm waiting on the carpinites from - and he mentioned that he might be getting some baby jags in as well.

After seeing them two weeks ago at an aquarium it got me thinking...

Considering the situation I think I'll stick to just the carpintis for now...

NBK the Carpinte is my choice I have raised both and both have their goods and bads, but the carpinte just did it for me. My Carpinte was always up front...the jag occassionally stayed out. The Jag IMO is more territorial, but the carpinte aggressiveness can easily match that of the jag and in some cases more. The carpinte is more adaptable far as housing and equally compatible as the jag. Im a big parachromis fan but the trust me I would take the carpinte over the jag. Both have equally matched traits and qualities but for me the Carpinte hands down the winner!!!

Jags much better looking fish IMO. I'd would wait until you get the 240gal. The 120 would be a cool setup for a pair of jags if you sold the lot. If you like parachromis check out the loiselei their colour is awsome.

I have the say originally the true tex, and then the carpinte have both totally captured me - they seem like such wonderful fish. They seem to have looks and personality ;)

Thanks for your advice... I will try to keep the 120 but don't see the chance of that happening very high once I get the 240g. But... thats in a years tine so who knows what will change...

For the moment I just want to keep my options open - but I am still willing to get rid of as much of my stock to house the carpinte....

I dont think your stocking list will work in a year time. Even if you get rid of one of the oscars... they are extremly sensitive to nitrates and they each need 50 gallons of water to themselves. Leaving you wilth around 20 gallons to stock with. You looking at doing at least 2 massive water changes a week (100%). Not to mention that keeping 2 O's together, just like any other large cichlids, there is a risk that they will not be able to co exist, your odds are improved by having other fish in the tank besides them that can take the brunt of the aggression. I hate to be negitive, but I just dont see that stocking list working out long term.

If you like personality and looks, have you ever considered a trimac? Beautiful fish with tons of personality. I have a 1.5" trimac right now and hes already super brave and comes to the glass to greet me. I know you like the carpinte so have you ever looked into Paratilipia Bleekeri ? They are beautys as well, black with turqoise spots.

thank you for your honesty... it is exactly the reason why i was asking for advice in the first place.

the most important thing for me is keeping my fish happy and healthy.
one of my o's is going rather soon, and if any more aggression is detected between any others then i am happy to separate.

seen a few trimacs on here but i have never really looked into them. as for the paratilipia bleekeri i have honestly never heard of them so thanks for the tip i'll have a look into them.

if you have info/experience on them that would be more than welcome as well.

so far i am just trying to weigh up some options and see where we go. i really appreciate all the advice - and if there is any more then that would be fantastic.
