my plywood tank build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
beautiful work your doing, I love how much $$ you save when you do it yourself. a RTC will fit, and these would be great grow out tanks for it, but eventually it will need something a little bigger. you say its 8x3x2, for a RTC you should consider going 8x4x3.
when you fiberglass the tank, be sure to lay it on thick on all the corners, or even use some epoxy on the corners.
as for lighting, home depot and most home improvement places have 48" double fluorescent light fixtures for under $35, and you can mix and match what kinda bulbs you want to put in. just make sure they are well protected from moisture, or you will blow ballasts and starters all the time.
I'm also not sure on how many gallons the tanks will be, but I recommend atleast 600 GPH coming from the sump... check out http://www.thatpetplace.com/ they have some decent mag drive pumps that should suit your needs, and they shouldnt break your bank either.
Keep up the hard work, you are making lots of progress!!!
What thickness glass/acrylic are you going with?

I think garf said approx. 359

we are still waiting for the fiberglass to get in, but as long as we get it in sometime this week we will start on that this weekend, I have decided to fiberglass the whole thing, inside and out, probably 2 layers and then possibly some of the "kitty hair" stuff on top of that. As well as the bracing garf recommends on the top (except I am doing that part with 2x6's), I am going to run 2x6's along the inside at the top on the tank to help with bowing, I am SO afraid this thing is gonna bust all over my house, so I'm building it as strong as I can make it, garf doesn't make it look strong enough :)

just wondering, is the pleco safe for a plywood tank? would it suck the paint off of it?

plecos will be fine in there. some plecos even eat wood, but since everything is going to be covered by fiberglass and resin, I doubt you will have a problem. plecos rather eat driftwood and other soft, waterlogged woods. keep them happy with vegetables and you will be A-ok!

cool project
