They are trying to camouflage themselves.

This is why it is best to keep Bichirs on sand, gravel can cut them up AS WELL AS become a very real intesinal blocking hazard.

Yea thats why I am getting sand this week (hopefully) I think she will be much happier and I wont be afraid of her dying because of ingesting gravel.

Do you think my Dels color will change a little if I get black sand?

Your Del will most likely get greener after a few weeks of being on black sand.

And you most definitely want to get that Pleco out of any tank with Bichirs in it.
