My polys

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I may in time I like to add slowly and let everyone get cozy. Also considering some Filter upgrades before adding anything else want to increase my turnover. Decissions decissions.

What size tank and whats your current filtration ? I converted to sumps and will never look back lol

125 g running two aqueon 55/75s Turnover is a touch low but most of my decor is lava rock and I have extra sponges in my filters so bio filtration is good to go. I may add a third for now going to a sump on this tank just seems like more complication than its worth ( current stand is cinder block would hafto build a wooden one).

I have considered an over head sump or diy canister useing a 50g food grade barrel (working for a beverage manufacturing company I have access to lots) but again HOB's are just easier with the current set up.

If I upgrade to a 180g or bigger I intend to keep the 125g or my 75g and use them as a sump then sell off everything else except a 29g as a hospital tank (or grab a 40g breeder for that.) If I can get above a 200g tank I can keep anything I want except a RTC which will never happen....so I would consider that my good to go tank size.

Seems like a good plan but some food for thought. I slapped a 20 gal sump on my 75 just for kicks and loved it soo much i sold off my 2262 and put a 30 gal sump on my 150. Really does make life easier no more squeezing out foam pads or lugging can around to clean them. Just change out filter socks when ever i feel like it.... throw the dirty ones in the wash machine or hose down in the yard.

If you can get your hands on a used tank the only money you'd spend would be on the the pump and hob overflow.

But agree hobs are much easier to deal with than cans

Oh empty tanks are not an issue i have empty 10g, 20g,29g,55g, 20g long(with a bulkhead in it). Its more the overflows they can get realy expensive compared to a HoB (which is stupid) . Pumps also get pricey. I was going to do a DiY pvc overflow at one point .... but there were so many horror storys of failed pumps and flooding :-/. makes me kind of iffy. And again I would hafto build a wooden stand as a sump will not fit under my 125g with the cinderblock stand.
I am sure I will get the itch to do one again at some point just a question of when I will pull the trigger.

They definitely are one of those "itch" type of things. I probably never would have gotten around to doing one if i werent planning on a herbie style for my next tank. Figured i would het the learning nonesence out of my system witha couple of smaller builds. You can get a decent dc pump for under 100. Eshopps hob over flows arent that bad either forgot what i paid for them

your makeing me itchy...

was eyeballing one of these if I was going to try a sump.

That with a diy overflow and a tube of silicone/ some plexiglass for baffles and I could do it fairly cheap. but again I would need a new stand.

I did my cinderblock stand as a low boy stand (22") since I am only 5'6" makes cleaning a lot more comfortable and I can sit in front of the tank and watch it better than most stands.... but screws the sump Idea a bit

Shouls be easy enough to add a few more cinder blocks. I never tried diy overflows im sure they are reliable but not reliable enough for me lol would end up divorced if it lost siphon and drain the sump.

As.for baffles you really dont need them unless you hvw a specific need (refugium, settli g chamber) i dont have any in my sump. Just filter socks in diy eggcrate sock holders a big laundry bag full of media and the pump/hearer

Binge Binge

hmm does a sump need to be directly below a tank? Could it be beside it as long as the water lvl was lower by say... 12-14 inches? I have a corner between the 125 and 75g I have a shelf in. could drop a 55g food grade barrel in there and use it as a sumpcut diffuser to make a shelf on top about 4 inches down from the lip of thee barrel put floss ect there (or just use socks) then use below that as bio media/ pump and heaters.

With that I could get away with doing the whole thing for the price of pump and maybe bio balls/ some other media..

sorry I have totaly hijacked your thread with this conversation lol

Hahah no need to apologize man
I would say yes but you may add head loss with the extra plumbing. Use 45's if you can instead of 90's (elbows) if you go with a dc pump you can always raise the gph to account for the additional loss you can even do an over head sump too. I say take a look in the filtration section see what those guys can come up with. If you start a thread pm it to me.... i love build threads
