If its been a reaaly long time i would do small water changes over a few days instead of a huge one in one shot. It miht be a bit of a shock for the the fish for the parameters to suddnely change. i would also add sal to help with healing.

wow thanks for the info

i did my best and today i saw it and it looked like it was dead and when i picked him up he started to swim so i will keep trying to help him.

I hate to say it, most people always disagree with me, but everytime i see my fish sick, I never put any medication in! I've always just done 10%-20% water change a day and it usually cures itself! but most people might go for medication or even Melafix!
I've never used meds either. My fish haven't ever "gotten sick" out of the blue (knock on wood) but in newly bought fish with torn fins, etc I've always always used daily water changes only. So I for, one, DO agree with you. But I know what you mean-most people want to dump in Melafix and different meds.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but also take into consideration that fish you just acquire will at some point or another have something that water changes alone can't fix...for example, something like camallanus does not become apparent until the later stages of the infestation, but previously the fish looks healthy. In the cases of things like injuries, meds would be needed if is infected with something like fungus or bacterial fin rot perhaps

it died. it went to fishi heaven.
